Roger Lewis

Roger Lewis was born in England in 1946 and currently lives in Cumbria.  He trained at several art colleges including Cardiff College of Art and Goldsmiths College in London. He graduated from Cardiff with First Class Honours in ceramics in 1969.  After a one-year post-graduate course he became a ceramic technician at Buckinghamshire College before being offered part-time teaching at Bradford College of Art in Yorkshire.  Within a few years he was appointed Senior Lecturer in Ceramics at Bradford – a post he held for 20 years.  He stopped teaching in 1997 to be able to continue and expand his long journey exploring and inventing with ceramic techniques.

His working method is based on playing with clay to discover what it will do – ideas come from this manipulation of the material.  Several unusual techniques have developed out of this research and these are the focus of the interesting and lively demonstrations and talks that he has been giving regularly over the past 20 years.

He has won several awards including prize winner at the Frechen Töpfermarkt in 1999 which led to a Prizewinner’s exhibition at the Museum, Het Valkhof in Nijmegen, Holland in 2000.  He has had numerous exhibitions in the UK and his work has also been exhibited in Holland, Germany, Italy, and Japan. His work is in many personal and public collections including the Museo de Ceramica in Valencia, The Hardingham Collection in Jamaica, and the Nickolas Treadwell Collection (now in Austria).

While he continues to work and exhibit, he is also currently writing a series of books that demonstrate and show examples of his many and various ceramic techniques.
