Karl Oparka

Karl is a photographer living in Auchterhouse, Angus. He was formerly Regius Professor of Plant Science at the University of Edinburgh.

In his retirement, Karl has retained his interest in plant form and function, and his pictures reflect an attention to detail that betrays his academic past.

In his work he uses a macro lens, combined with ‘focus stacking’, to produce hyper-realistic images of floral architecture. With this technique, about twenty images are captured in the vertical plane and ‘stacked’ together to produce one single picture, revealing the exquisite structures hidden within flowers.
