Brian Baxter

Brian Baxter is well-known in Dundee art circles having been President of the Dundee Art Society in the early 1990s. He was born in Glasgow but grew up in Yorkshire, graduating from Oxford University with an MA (Hons) in PPE, and a B.Phil and D.Phil in Philosophy. 

He returned to Scotland to pursue an academic career at Dundee University in the 1970s, and lived in Fife for nearly forty years.  Although he has painted and drawn since childhood he became a committed artist in the 1980s. He and his wife (also an artist) now live in Somerset.

Brian is known for watercolours but also enjoy working in mixed media, pastels, gouache, acrylics and oils. The subjects that most delight him are wildlife and domestic animals. He loves capturing the essence of living things, vibrant with energy. Through the handling of pigment, the energy of the brushstrokes and mark-making, he seeks to convey the spirit of the living creature. These works tie in with his interests in environmental matters. They treat other creatures as having a status worthy of our interest and concern. He also paints flowers, still life, landscapes and people.

Brian’s paintings are collected and exhibited widely. Over seven hundred of his works are held in private collections throughout Europe, North America and Australia. They form part of the permanent collection of the House of Lords, Grampian Health Board, and Watson and Philip plc, amongst other public bodies. His work has been shown at the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour.
