Michael J Ross
Born in Edinburgh in 1967, Michael has lived all over Scotland. He is very passionate about Scotland and this comes through in his paintings. Although Michael originally studied graphic art and design, as a painter he is entirely self-taught. His work has developed into a unique, illustrative style and is collected throughout the UK and abroad.
When Michael was young he loved visiting castles and harbours, these visits have left a lasting impression as he returns time and again to the same subjects in his paintings such as Hairy Highlanders, drunks, pub scenes, bagpipes and quirky little harbours. Michael says “People often comment that my paintings are humorous, but I don’t set out thinking, oh this one will be funny, it’s just the way I paint, the way I see the world.”
Realistic size and scale are immaterial to Michael, and as in mediaeval paintings, the central characters are painted larger than life to emphasis their importance.
Exhibiting in many galleries and art fairs successfully, he has had many solo shows in England and Scotland. Michael has also had his work published by TARTAN 2CV and CANNS DOWN PRESS.
