Alison McWhirter

Artist Biography

Alison McWhirter

Alison McWhirter was born in Dumfries, Scotland in 1975.

McWhirter attended Bath Academy where she gained a BA in Fine Art in 1998 and an MA in Visual Culture 2000.

After establishing a career in publishing as well as teaching Art, she returned to South West Scotland to pursue her career as a painter.

She has a passion for colour and while at first glance there is a traditional element to her work, a contemporary edge subtly entices the viewer to look further.

Her paintings are instinctive responses to her subject, their vibrancy and loose, bold brushwork creating the sense of spontaneity which is prevalent in all her work.

The Scotland on Sunday in 2011 described her as ‘The new Scottish Colourist’ and Homes and Interiors Magazine deemed her one of the top Contemporary Scottish Colourists making waves in the art world.

McWhirter has shown internationally including New York where in 2017 an image of one of her paintings was used on subway trains to advertise the fair.

Her paintings are much sought after and her instantly recognisable work is held in private collections throughout the UK.
