Nael Hanna was born in Nineveh in Northern Iraq and is of mixed culture, Greek and Christian Orthodox. He grew up with a passion for art, spending a great deal of his childhood studying and drrawing animals, birds and people.
His interest in art continued throughout his career in the army where he served during the Iraq - Iran war. This resulted in an award from The Ministry of Education in Bagdad to study in Britain. In 1983 he took a foundation language and art course at Southampton before being accepted for a degree at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee.
In 1987, during his course, he won a place at Hospitalfield, Arbroath where his work became heavily influenced by the dramatic coastal scenery of the East Coast.
He graduated in 1989 with a First Class Honours Degree and was awarded a travelling scholarship to Florence from The Royal Scottish Academy. On his return to Dundee he continued his studies and after qualifying MPhil in Art he took up a position as lecturer in the Fine Art Department at Duncan of Jordanstone.
His work has earned him many prestigious prizes and is held in notable collections wordwide.
